Danby, Vermont – Historic Property Restoration and Exterior Improvements Completed

Preserving Historic Character While Enhancing Durability, Functionality, and Curb Appeal

We recently completed a comprehensive restoration and exterior improvement project that focused on preserving the character of this historic property while enhancing its durability, functionality, and long-term performance.

Slate Roof Restoration & Weather Protection

One of the primary components of the project was repairing the existing slate roofs on both the barn and shed. Our team carefully addressed damaged areas while maintaining the original appearance and integrity of the slate roofing system. We also completed improvements to the home’s slate roof, including the installation of new snow pans and replacement of missing drip edge components to better protect the structure from Vermont’s seasonal weather conditions.

The barn received three newly installed replacement doors, custom-built to match the existing historic doors. To ensure these doors could be used reliably for years to come, we updated the framing within each opening and made the necessary structural improvements before installation.

Additional exterior upgrades included the installation of a new Acre composite 5/4″ x 12″ skirt board around the house and attached garage. This low-maintenance material provides a clean, finished appearance while offering exceptional durability against moisture and weather exposure.

As part of the basement improvements, we enclosed an unused window opening and installed a new furnace vent through the area. We also created a new insulated basement access hatch door, transforming an old window opening into a practical and energy-efficient access point.

To address areas vulnerable to weather and age-related deterioration, we removed sections of siding on the designated rear wall and performed a thorough inspection for rot. Damaged materials were replaced as needed using new pre-primed and painted cedar clapboards, ensuring the repairs blended seamlessly with the existing exterior while providing lasting protection.

The project also included replacing aging soffit and fascia components on the attached garage, along with several older sections of fascia on the main house. These upgrades eliminated deteriorated materials, including areas affected by lead-based paint, and provided a fresh, durable finish that complements the home’s historic character.

A Thoughtful Balance of Preservation & Modernization

This project successfully balanced preservation and modernization, ensuring the property retains its timeless appeal while benefiting from thoughtful upgrades designed to improve performance, safety, and longevity. We are proud to have helped preserve this beautiful property for many years to come.
